😄 Fun Fact Break

Did you know Hamburger Helper was invented in 1971 by General Mills during a meat shortage? It was originally dubbed “Hamburger Helper” to stretch out hamburger into multiple meals using pasta and sauce packet seasoning — to help families save money. The mascot was even a gloved hand named Lefty! (Really.)

🍽️ Pro Tips & Variations

  • Sneak in veggies: toss in diced bell peppers, broccoli florets, or shredded zucchini for extra fiber without sacrificing flavor—kids won’t even flinch.
  • Make it crispy: finish with toasted breadcrumbs or broil cheese for a golden crust—kinda chef-y, kinda boxy nostalgia.
  • Prep ahead: this reheats beautifully—just stir in a splash of broth to refresh before microwaving (leftovers last up to 3–4 days) .

Homemade Hamburger Helper
Prep Time:5 minutes
Cook Time:15 minutes
Total Time:20 minutes

Ingredients

  • Avocado Oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • cups beef stock
  • ½ pound pipe rigate
  • 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons diced chives divided

Instructions

  • Heat a large pot over medium, then drizzle in the olive oil. Once it’s shimmering, toss in the diced onion and sauté until soft and see-through—about 6 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, just until your kitchen smells amazing.
  • Add the ground beef, season it with salt and pepper, and break it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Let it brown until cooked through.
  • Stir in the tomato paste and sugar, and seasonings until the beef is coated and everything smells rich and toasted.
  • Pour in the beef stock and bring the mixture to a boil. Add your pasta and let it cook, stirring now and then, until perfectly al dente—about 8 to 10 minutes, depending on your pasta shape.
  • Take it off the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar and half the chives. Stir until the cheese melts into that dreamy sauce.
  • Scoop into bowls and finish with the rest of the chives. Dinner = done.
