Easy Salisbury Steak with Homemade Gravy

Jump to Recipe

This Easy Salisbury Steak with Homemade Gravy is the kind of dinner that feels like it came straight out of a cozy little diner, except you made it in your own kitchen and didn’t have to put on real pants. Juicy seasoned ground beef patties are seared in a skillet, then smothered in a simple homemade brown gravy made with butter, flour, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.

It’s rich, savory, comforting, and very much giving “mashed potatoes were invented for this exact moment.”

Why You’ll Love This Easy Salisbury Steak

If you grew up with Salisbury steak as a TV dinner situation, I need you to know this homemade version is not that. Historically, Salisbury steak has definitely had a reputation as a frozen dinner classic, but the from-scratch version is so much better: juicy beef patties, real pan gravy, and that cozy, savory flavor that tastes like something your grandma would make on a random Tuesday.

This recipe is perfect when you want something hearty and comforting, but you don’t want to make an entire meatloaf or commit to a full Sunday dinner production. The patties come together with ground beef, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic, seasoned breadcrumbs, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Then everything gets cooked in a skillet and finished with homemade gravy.

Basically, it’s hamburger patties in their soft life era.

What Is Salisbury Steak?

Salisbury steak is a classic American comfort food made with seasoned ground beef patties, usually browned in a skillet and served with gravy. It’s similar to meatloaf in flavor, but instead of baking everything as one loaf, the beef mixture is shaped into individual patties and cooked on the stovetop.

Fun little food history moment: Salisbury steak is named after Dr. James Henry Salisbury, a 19th-century physician who believed minced beef had health benefits. His original version was much more, um, intense — he reportedly described it as “muscle pulp of beef,” which is maybe the least appetizing phrase ever typed on a food blog.

Thankfully, today’s version is much more delicious: seasoned beef patties, golden seared edges, and lots of rich homemade gravy.

Why This Recipe Works

The beef patties are packed with flavor from Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, fresh garlic, onion powder, seasoned breadcrumbs, and an egg to help hold everything together.

The gravy is made right in the same skillet with butter, flour, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. This keeps the recipe simple, but still gives you that homemade gravy flavor without needing a packet.

And because the patties cook in the pan before the gravy is made, you get all those browned bits at the bottom of the skillet. Those little bits are flavor confetti. Do not underestimate them.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the beef patties, you’ll need lean ground beef, a large egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, fresh garlic, seasoned breadcrumbs, onion powder, salt, pepper, and avocado oil for cooking.

For the homemade gravy, you’ll need butter, flour, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.

That’s it. Nothing fancy, nothing weird, no “go harvest a shallot under the full moon” energy.

Tips for the Best Salisbury Steak

Use lean ground beef, but don’t overwork the mixture. Mix everything just until combined so the patties stay tender instead of tough.

When you form the patties, try to make them about the same size and thickness so they cook evenly. A slightly thinner oval shape gives it that classic Salisbury steak look.

Let the patties get a good sear in the skillet before moving them around. That browning adds flavor to both the beef and the gravy.

When making the gravy, whisk the flour into the butter until smooth before slowly adding the beef broth. This helps keep the gravy from getting lumpy.

What to Serve with Salisbury Steak

This is practically begging to be served with mashed potatoes. The homemade gravy over creamy potatoes is the whole point, honestly.

It would also be great with egg noodles, rice, roasted vegetables, green beans, or even a simple side salad if you want something fresh next to the cozy gravy situation.

A Cozy Weeknight Dinner That Feels Like a Throwback

This Easy Salisbury Steak with Homemade Gravy is one of those recipes that feels nostalgic, but still totally fits into a regular weeknight dinner routine. It’s simple, filling, and made with basic ingredients, but it tastes like you put in way more effort than you actually did.

Which is my favorite kind of dinner.

It’s giving diner plate. It’s giving comfort food. It’s giving “I should definitely make mashed potatoes with this.”

Total Time:30 minutes

Ingredients

Beef Steaks

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Pepper to taste
  • Avocado oil for cooking

Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 3/4 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, seasoned breadcrumbs, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  • Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  • Heat a drizzle of avocado oil in a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and mostly cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  • Reduce the heat to medium. Add the butter to the same skillet and let it melt. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk until smooth. Cook for about 1 minute, whisking often.
  • Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder, then continue whisking until the gravy starts to thicken.
  • Add the patties back into the skillet and spoon some of the gravy over the top. Let everything simmer for about 5–8 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is thickened to your liking.
  • Serve warm with plenty of gravy spooned over the top.

Notes

For the best texture, mix the beef mixture gently and only until everything comes together. Overmixing can make the patties more dense.
This is especially good served with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, rice, or roasted vegetables.
