Homemade Croutons

Have extra bread lying around? Let’s turn it into crouton magic! ✨ I always make these with my homemade Roasted Tomato Soup!

Homemade croutons are a total game-changer—so simple to make and light years better than anything from a bag. The best part? You can make them your way! Any kind of bread works (yes, even gluten-free), and you can season them however you’re vibing that day.

Want ‘em big and crispy or soft and bite-sized? You’re in control! Plus, they’re the ultimate salad upgrade, or perfect for adding a crunchy kick to a cozy bowl of tomato soup or gazpacho. Get ready to elevate your leftover bread! 😎

HOMEMADE CROUTONS NOTES:

Making homemade croutons is super simple—you only need three basic ingredients:

  • Bread: Any type works, but it’s best if it’s a day or two old.

  • Olive oil (or butter): Your choice—olive oil for a classic taste, or go with melted butter for extra richness.

  • Seasonings: This is where you can get creative! I always throw in garlic powder, plus some salt and black pepper. You can also mix it up with Italian seasoning, blackening spices, or even a sprinkle of Parmesan for extra flavor.

Homemade Crouton Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf of bread (about 12 ounces), cut into 3/4-inch cubes

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, toss the bread chunks with olive oil until evenly coated. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper over the top and gently mix until everything is well combined.

  3. Spread the seasoned bread in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.

  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes, turning the croutons halfway through to make sure they brown evenly on all sides. Keep a close eye on them, as the size of the cubes can affect cooking time.

  5. Once golden and crispy, take them out of the oven and let them cool completely. Use right away or store in an airtight container for up to a week!
