Creamy Ranch Chicken Tater Tot Bake (Grocery Day Dinner)
Prep Time:10 minutes
Cook Time:40 minutes
Total Time:50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 rotisserie chicken cooked and shredded or chopped
  • 1 ½ cups sour cream
  • 1 10.75 oz can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 0.4 oz ranch seasoning packet (restaurant style)
  • 1 cup cooked bacon crumbled
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • Frozen tater tots enough to fully cover the top
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F and lightly grease a cast-iron or oven safe dish.
  • In a large bowl, combine the shredded rotisserie chicken, sour cream, cream of chicken soup, ranch seasoning, paprika, ground mustard, pepper, and onion powder. Stir until everything is well mixed and fully coated.
  • Fold in the crumbled bacon and shredded cheddar cheese, reserving a small handful of cheese for the top if you want it extra melty.
  • Spread the mixture evenly into your prepared pan or dish.
  • Arrange the frozen tater tots in an even layer over the top, covering the entire surface.
  • Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden and crispy and the filling is hot and bubbly.
  • Let it sit for a few minutes before serving, then dig in.

Notes

  • Can I use canned chicken or leftover chicken instead? Yes! Rotisserie is easiest, but any cooked, shredded chicken works here. Just make sure it’s not super wet.
  • Will the sour cream curdle? Nope—since it’s mixed with the soup and baked gently, it stays creamy and smooth.
  • Can I make this ahead of time? You can mix the filling ahead and store it in the fridge. Add the tater tots right before baking so they stay crispy.
  • How do I keep the tater tots crispy? Don’t cover the dish while baking, and make sure the tots are in a single layer (no overlapping).
  • Can I use a different cheese? Totally. Colby Jack or a cheddar blend would work great here—anything that melts well.
  • Do I have to use the ranch packet? That’s where most of the flavor comes from, so I wouldn’t skip it—but you can adjust to taste if you’re sensitive to salt.
  • Can I use turkey bacon? Yes! It’ll still be good—just slightly less rich.
  • Is this super salty? It can lean salty with the ranch, bacon, and soup—so you don’t need to add extra salt beyond what’s listed.
  • Can I add veggies? You could, but keep them minimal so it doesn’t get watery. This recipe is definitely more comfort-food focused.
  • What size baking dish should I use? A standard 9x13 works perfectly for this amount.
  • Can I freeze it? You can freeze the filling, but for best results, add fresh tater tots when baking so they stay crispy.
  • What’s the texture like? Creamy, cheesy, and cozy on the bottom… crispy, golden tots on top.
